Daniel Brant Receives the Naomi Schor Memorial Award


Daniel Brant has received the Naomi Schor Memorial Award (2009) for the best paper presented by a graduate student at the 35th Annual Nineteenth-Century French Studies Colloquium, "Fossilization & Evolution," Salt Lake City, UT, 22-24 October 2009. The title of his paper: "Racial Evolution and Colonial Gender: Louis Bertrand's 'Latin-Mediterranean' Solution"


New Head of the Department of French.


Beginning with the 2009-2010 academic year, Professor Karen Fresco becomes Head of the Department of French. Professor Fresco brings the valued experience of having previously served as Acting Head and as Director of Graduate Studies. She brings the additional knowledge of having directed the Program in Medieval Studies, an interdisciplinary unit with ties to various other departments across the campus. Professor Fresco is taking over from Professor Mortimer, who concludes five successful years leading the Department. Congratulations and best wishes to Professor Fresco!


Professor Mortimer named Chevalier in the Ordre des Palmes Académiques.


Professor Mortimer recently received the title of "Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Palmes Académiques" from the French government, for promoting the French language and culture through her remarkable publishing and teaching record. The Ordre des Palmes Académiques, created by Napoléon Bonaparte and re-established in 1955, honors prominent teachers and scholars who have made an exceptional contribution to French education and culture, both in France and abroad. Nominees are recommended by the "Conseil de l'Ordre" presided over by the French Minister of Education. The Department of French warmly congratulates Professor Mortimer for her achievement!
